Project Overview

I collaborated with a team of designers to develop a design strategy for an early-idea-stage 245D license consulting business.

My contributions were:

  • Visualizing our process through whiteboarding

  • Time management through regular check-ins to ensure we met our design milestones

  • Conducting a competitive analysis

  • Prototyping the Service and Contact web page

Our work was refined and integrated into a final strategy video presentation for the founder, which provided a comprehensive overview of the proposed design strategy.

The Client

The founder is passionate about contributing to the livelihoods of the vulnerable populations. They want to leverage their knowledge of the 245D licensure process and start a consulting business aiming to educate and guide individuals who are seeking/have 245D licenses.

Client Goals:

  • Clarify the complicated application and 245D licensing process.

  • Remove barriers to those who need it the most, the clients, who rely on the care from Providers.

Problem Space

Numerous organizations in Minnesota provide services for people with disabilities and those aged 65 and above, in order to do so need an active 245D license from the MN Department of Human Health Services. The license process is complex, and individual consultants have emerged to help Providers navigate it, but there is still a significant need for more consultants.

Create an end-to-end design strategy to help the organization appeal to and connect with Providers who are looking to become licensed or maintain their licenses.

Project Goal

Understanding the whole picture

My team and I opted to create a touchpoint map in order to understand the different possible interactions a user could have with a consulting business.

Then with the findings culled through secondary research our team was able to identify areas of focus for a multi-touchpoint strategy.

The competition had no low cost entry points for Providers

Based on the competitive analysis the consultation fees charged by the competitors started at $120/hr or more.

This created an opportunity for us to devise a new service model that would address the needs of this underserved market segment.

All user experience touch points for 245D Consultancy will help small Home Healthcare Providers to feel empowered and confident so that they are able to understand the 245D license application process and establish/maintain a successful home healthcare business.

strategy Statement

We will do this by focusing on making services accessible through cost and simplification of the sign-up process.

As a result, we hope to see a reduction of license rejections, corrective actions and revocations as well as an increase in passing audits.

By illustrating the benefits of the service in a clear and engaging manner, potential customers can better understand the value of the service and how it can help them achieve their goals. The storyboard can also highlight the unique features and benefits of the affordable consulting service, such as personalized attention, practical advice, and ongoing support.

Storyboard

By leveraging this insight, a new business could be developed to fill the gap in the market and provide consultation services at a more affordable price point, enabling more customers to access these services and making the market more accessible to everyone.

Prototype

The prototypes were refined and integrated into a final strategy video presentation, which provided a comprehensive overview of the proposed business strategy. The presentation highlighted the key advantages of the proposed approach, including unique value propositions and a strong competitive advantage.

What I’d Do Differently Next Time

This was my first time dipping in to design strategy (Yaay)! 🎉 I’m immensely grateful to experience a taste of what it’s actually like. On that note, a few things I’ve learned:

  1. It’s important to provide a starting point for the organization. Our team focused heavily on painting the picture of the what the strategy would look like from start to end - which is great, but can be daunting from the perspective of a client who needs a feasible point to hit the ground running in order to effectively implement the strategy. Next time, I would include actionable steps for short term and long term strategy implementation.

  2. Make time for non-design tasks (like writing a presentation script). Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in being pixel perfect with your designs. We all just want to get it “right” for the client and ultimately the users! But it’s also critical to make time to think and plan how our designs will be communicated. In this case it was a video presentation, which meant that there needed to be time carved out for script writing, practicing, and recording. Then to layer on top of that the coordination of doing it in a team setting and ensuring there was cohesion. In the future, I would include the logistical tasks alongside scoping out the design work.
