First solo project as a Prime Digital Academy UX student. The prompt provided in the project was to create a new product concept for a food delivery website or wellness mobile app. I chose to create a new product concept for a wellness mobile app. I made this decision because I wanted to challenge myself with designing a mobile experience for a field that I was not familiar with.

In addition to creating a new product concept, the purpose of this project was to walk-through (more like a sprint 🏃🏻‍♀️💨 as this was a 1.5 week process 😲) about the 3 design stages, identification, prototype and evaluation.

Understanding the Problem

Instead of trying to create a solution for an audience that I wasn’t a part of I needed to conduct research to better understand what potential needs were not being met for wellness apps users.

To do this, I opted to gather information by using direct storytelling research method. I created a social media call-out to ask for 3 participants to volunteer 30 minutes of their time. I was able to connect with 3 people and hear their experiences using a wellness app.

What I found was that all 3 participants used some sort of fitness tracking app quite heavily. There were 2 themes and 1 feature that were a common thread in the interviews:

  1. Convenience of app integration to their lifestyle

  2. Sense of accomplishment through visual tracking aids

  3. Notification settings

Lastly, all interviewees described their lifestyle as busy or considered themselves fairly active. One pain point that arose in different ways for each person was the ability to customize their fitness app to match their lifestyle a little more.

The Problem:

I concluded that I would solve the customization issue and summarized my problem as:

Adults with busy and active lifestyles were unable to customize their fitness goals to meet their unique routines in their current fitness tracking apps.

Initial Design Conceptualization

Once I identified the problem, I could begin to prototype a solution. I focused on creating a feature to enhance the user experience of integrating a fitness app in to their lifestyle. That feature is a customizable schedule that would enable users to fine-tune their fitness goals depending on their unique routines and goals.

I sketched out low-fidelity wireframes of my app, then to take it up a level I created digital wireframes in Figma.
